English translation:

As a Singaporean living abroad, I have been following the recent election with great interest.

When I first came to the United States to study, I was amazed by the liberal atmosphere on campus. Protests are common here, and students holding placards will not attract any attention. But the pro-Palestinian protests escalated into the forced occupation of the administrative building and clashes with pro-Jewish groups and the police. When I witnessed the chaotic scenes involving unrelated teachers and students, I couldn’t help but imagine what the consequences would be if local universities also allowed demonstrations – the conflict between opposing groups would tear apart the racial harmony built over decades, and once this bond is broken, it will be difficult to repair. If politicians find it politically beneficial to provoke group confrontation, they will definitely manipulate such issues in the election.

Is the future of Singapore’s opposition party also based on identity politics? Relying on inciting emotions and divisive issues to win votes?

If Singapore embarks on this path of no return, it will be difficult to heal the scars even if it takes decades. I hope that the sober people in the Workers’ Party can curb this unhealthy trend in time. With their strength, they would be able to challenge the ruling party without resorting to identity politics.
