Activist: Don’t Discriminate Against Drug Traffickers Just Because They Don’t Fit The Norm
Activist Kirsten Han has once again pointed out how cruel Singapore is. Recently, she brought up the case of Malaysian drug trafficker Nagaenthran Dharmalingam, who was executed two years ago. She frowned upon the authorities for giving Nagaenthran time to recover from Covid-19 before going on to execute him. She finds Singapore brutal and inhumane.
“So we’re going to give you healthcare and treatment until you are well, and then we will kill you”.
Han added that other than Singapore, there is “no other form of killing that is quite this way”.
She is part of the Transformative Justice Collective, a group that prides itself on defending drug traffickers against the death penalty. They believe that Nagaenthran should not have been punished as he had low IQ. They claimed that he was mentally disabled even though the court found that he had intellectual functioning and did not suffer from intellectual disability.
Nagaenthran had trafficked 42.72 grams of heroin from Malaysia to Singapore. 200 milligrams of heroin is already an overdose and enough to be lethal.
Kirsten Han appealed to Singaporeans to stop being so cruel to offenders just because they are different from us. She wants people to accept them.
“I’ve really seen people with hugely different experiences of Singapore. They don’t fit the norm and therefore, they are not as accepted and there is discrimination and they are supposed to put up with it.
The Singapore that I want to be a citizen of is one that recognises human dignity… everyone should be able to thrive in life rather than being punished for not conforming to whatever state policy we have”.
