After weeks of quiet on the Singapore-Malaysia water agreemnents, Malaysia’s current Prime Minister has reignited the issue by publicly stating he wants Singapore to pay more than 10 times the price as stipulated in the current agreement. The current agreement will only expire in 2061.

On 9 July 2018, current Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan has clearly reiterated Singapore’s position on the matter and highlighted the fact that Dr Mahathir himself had chose not to revise the price previously as he knew doing so would increase the price of treated water Singapore sold to Johor.

“Dr Mahathir Mohamad had noted in 2002 Malaysia did not ask for a review when the water pact was due as it knew that any revision would also affect the price of treated water sold by Singapore to Malaysia.

Since the new Pakatan Harapan Government swept into power, Dr Mahathir has returned to his former antics of badgering Singapore over the water agreements despite these being legally binding agreements ratified by the United Nations.
