Since historian Dr Thum Ping Tjin got embroiled in the controversy of meeting up Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Tun Mahathir and urging him to take the leadership of spreading democracy in South-East Asia (perceived by the Singaporean public as inviting Mahathir to get involved in Singapore politics), Thum Ping Tjin has kept silent apart from his clarifications of not being a traitor to Singapore after the heavy backlash.

An NUS student shared online that during the height of this controversy, Dr Thum was invited to an NUS lecturer‘s class to give a talk and interact to students. The student said that by inviting Dr Thum to NUS, Dr Thum became a hero in NUS and the NUS senior lecturer Saroja Devi who invited Thum gave the proverbial middle finger to the Government. Given that NUS is the premier public tertiary school in Singapore, could this be a sign of NUS’s academic independence and plurality?

What was said or discussed during the lecture was not revealed by the NUS student but it would definitely not be song to the ears of some.
