Malaysia and Singapore has at last concluded the deferment of the KL-Singapore HSR which was the subject to intense scrutiny ever since Dr Mahathir Mohamad returned to power. The RM110 billion project is set to be delayed for a period of 2 years and abortive costs that were jointly determined and agreed upon by both sides ($15 million sgd) will be paid by Malaysia by January 2019.

Malaysia’s Economic Minister Azmin reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the HSR project and appreciated Singapore’s willingness to accept a deferment that was not stipulated in the existing bilateral agreement. When quizzed on the amount of compensation to be paid in the even Malaysia does not proceed with the HSR project even after the deferment period, Azmin said that he would not speak about the exact compensation as the Malaysian Government fully expects to proceed with the project.

Previous compensation numbers revealed by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad was in the $500 million ballpark figure and any compensation after this deferment period would logically increase due to the further delay and eventual cancellation.
