How far will you go to prove a point, even if it may be awfully wrong?

It takes a lot of guts but not a lot of wits for ex-Presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian to dox himself on social media. Doxing or doxxing is usually done by people to harass others. This is an exception.

A few days ago, Tan thought it a good idea to make his IC no., email address, date of birth and phone number public.

“Why am I posting this? I find that the paranoia about the privacy of NRIC and contact details to be over-blown.

Whenever there is a data breach and the NRIC or contact details are stolen, it seemed to be a big issue. I do not think so.”

The former Presidential candidate had his SingPass account blocked after someone tried to guess his password 6 times. He also became victim to numerous scams and intends to make a police report.

Come again, did you say paranoia?

Doxxing laws are enacted for a reason. As someone who qualified for the past Presidential Election, Tan should have known better. He should not have underestimated, much less challenged, the need for having these laws. Disclosing his personal details on social media was like inviting people to abuse them to their hearts’ content.

Sure enough, he had his fill of scam calls and it is not wrong to say that he was asking for it.

Today, Tan Kin Lian thinks he did the right thing and continues to speak his mind on social media. From boasting about his makeshift “bridge” constructed from his election poster to posting about receiving more scam messages, he sure has gained a lot of love among Singaporeans.

Come, let us congratulate him for reaching a whole new level of ownself-dox-ownself and thank him for sacrificing himself so that Singaporeans can learn valuable lessons.
