Stop Telling Singaporeans To Speak Up And Fight For Something When We Are Fine With Life As It Is

The Hong Kong protests have made international headlines. The country may be geographically close to us but it seems like a stretch when some people compare them to Singapore.

Some may find it disappointing that Singaporeans do not have the guts to fight for their own rights, like the Hong Kongers. Some may criticize Singaporeans for conforming to norms or not caring enough about the country.

The comparisons are unnecessary. There is no need to worry.

It does not mean that Singaporeans who do not speak up do not care. It does not mean that they are ignorant about the nation’s issues. There are many who have never attended events at the Speaker’s Corner, never signed petitions or written complaint letters. Does it mean that they feel less for our country as compared to those who have? Does it mean that they do not have the country’s best interests at heart?

Certainly not. On the contrary, they may be contented with the way things are. When you are happy with the status quo, is there even anything to speak up for? If not, why bother stirring trouble? Why not live life as it is?

Sometimes, those who are vocal have to stop blaming others for being quiet. Stop asking people to speak up when they are perfectly fine with the way things are. Stop acting like you are cool because you want to fight for everything every single time.

We respect the Hong Kong-ers for standing up for what they believe but no, do not try to use their example to tell Singaporeans to do the same when the circumstances are so different. There is really no point.
