On 21st Aug, Yeo Wee Soon, a 48 year old Singaporean man pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to his pet dog, resulting in its death.
The dog named To-Bi, which had only been purchased about a week before, had dirtied its fur with its own faeces. While Yeo was washing To-Bi, it struggled, and Yeo hit the dog twice to discipline it. When To-Bi bit Yeo’s finger, he hit the dog again, causing the dog to collapse.
Yeo later attempted to revive the dog by hitting its head twice against the bathtub, and placing it in ice water. After Yeo showered the dog with cold water, it stopped moving. Yeo later disposed of the dog’s body in a pail and dropped it into a river along Delta Avenue.
In a separate case, 45 year old Yeo Poh Kwee was sentenced to 18 months jail for abusing his pet dog. The 45 year old wanted to abandon his pet poodle because of complaints from his neighbours that it was too noisy when he was away. Yeo ran down 20 floors of a HDB block with his dog on a leash and left it to bleed to death from its injuries. The abuse was only discovered by a cleaner after blood stains were spotted on the staircase walls.
In Singapore, there are heavy penalties for failing to provide proper care for your pets. Offenders found guilty of failing to provide adequate care for their pet or abandoning them may face up to a fine of $10,000 and/or jailed up to 12 months for a first offence, and fined up to $20,000 and/or jailed up to 2 years for subsequent offences.
A pet is not just a play thing that we can get rid of once it becomes a burden or when we get bored of it. Pet owners are responsible for ensuring that their pets are well taken care of, while at the same time making sure that the pet does not cause danger or nuisance to others.
