Heartening To See Goh Chok Tong, Chiam See Tong On Good Terms Despite Differences
It is hard to find a politician who is passionate and true in serving the country. Chiam See Tong is one such man, according to Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.
The two had met at a gala dinner for the Chiam See Tong Sports Fund yesterday. Chiam was not supposed to attend due to health reasons but made the effort to show up and shake hands with those who were there. Mr Goh graced the event as the guest-of-honour and sure had many nice things to say.
Although the two of them have different political views, they hold strong respect for each other. Goh sees Chiam as a rare gem who did not join politics for selfish reasons or because he disliked the PAP, but purely because he wanted Singapore to have a two-party system like other democracies.
He said that Chiam is a “well-meaning, decent and honest politician” who worked endlessly for Singapore. Chiam is the longest-serving opposition politician and is known for building the local sports scene from scratch. He had established a fund to help disadvantaged children pursue sports and has been championing this cause for a very long time.
The dinner raised $160,000 and will go on to help many people in Singapore, but an equally big takeaway was to see them on good terms despite their differences. Swee.
