Is Jeannette Chong-Aruldoss Joining WP? Or Just Trying Her Hand in Different Parties?
On 11th Oct, Worker’s Party (WP) member Yee Jenn Jong updated his Facebook with a post showing Jeannette Chong-Aruldoss together with some WP volunteers making house visits around Eunos Crescent. While some might be quick to conclude that she has joined the WP, she was not seen wearing the WP’s polo tee-shirt during the house visits. To recap, Jeannette announced just over a month ago that she would not be joining any other party after leaving Singapore People’s Party (SPP).
Jeannette first entered politics as a member of the Reform Party in 2010. While she was there, she spent several months walking the ground and learning the ropes with Kenneth Jeyaratnam, son of notable Singapore opposition politician J. B. Jeyaretnam.
She soon moved on and joined the National Solidarity Party (NSP) in Mar 2011. While with the NSP, she was fielded as a candidate for the Mountbatten Single Member Constituency (SMC) in the 2011 General Election (GE) but lost by a relatively small margin.
Owing to her success in attracting a sizeable number of votes at that time, she was later elected as Secretary-General of the NSP in Oct 2013. Two years later, she left the NSP after being unsuccessful in her bid for Party Chairman. She went on to join the SPP. While with the SPP, Jeannette was again fielded as the candidate for Mountbatten SMC in the 2015 GE but lost a second time.
All her time and exposure with the various political parties has made her a very experienced politician. Isn’t it a waste of her time and effort if she were to leave for good as she claimed?
Given her most recent appearance with the WP, it seems unlikely that she would really leave politics. It remains to be seen if she would eventually join the WP, or if she would move on to another political party since it appears that most parties are ready to welcome her into their ranks. After the WP, she could try her hand at Tan Cheng Bock’s Progress Singapore Party (PSP) perhaps?
