Are Some Singaporeans Overreacting To Ramesh And The Condo Saga?

Singaporeans have been hearing the name “Ramesh” over and over for the past week. Ramesh found overnight fame after a video of him shouting at a condominium security guard went viral. Followhing which, Singaporeans expressed anger at his arrogant behaviour and shamed him by exposing his personal information e.g. his employment at JP Morgan, educational qualifications, etc.

While some people feel that it is necessary to stand up against his cocky behaviour, there are others who wonder if we are overreacting. Are we?

Firstly, Ramesh definitely deserved to be called out for his rude and haughty behaviour. As a supposedly educated person, he should not have lashed out at the security guard with vulgar, baseless arguments. The latter was just doing his job and should not be blamed for it.

It was also wrong of Ramesh to use his wealth to put others down (cue: $1.5million). It was disgusting to see him being so self-entitled, thinking he can call the shots when he has no right to bully a fellow Singaporean at all.

Given his behaviour, he cannot blame Singaporeans for shaming him as it was only natural to be angry. However, some people decided to take it a step further by pulling pranks, starting petitions and coming up with fake news using his personal particulars. It is understandable for us to want to scold him online but have some gone too far?

It is justified to shame him based on how he had acted in the video, as everyone can tell and definitely agree with that. Anything more though, would be hard to prove. So why bother? While he did harass an innocent security guard, Singaporeans should not stoop to his level because we are not like him.

Since the authorities are already looking into the incident, it should be ok to leave them to it while we continue to scold him online (and nothing more). There are ways to seek justice but we should not go too far and make ourselves lose credibility.

Singaporeans will not let Ramesh go unpunished but let us do it the right way. In the words of another Singaporean:

Let’s try to be the better man. Let’s try to be more gracious… No bad deed goes unpunished but let’s not take matters into our own hands and inadvertently harm innocent bystanders along the way… we can be a more gracious society and we are so much better than this.
