Tan Jee Say Confident About Opposition Alliance, Believes Tan Cheng Bock Will Help Them Split PAP’s Vote

“We hope that Dr Tan [Cheng Bock] will not split the opposition vote, and will just split the PAP vote”. These are the words of SingFirst’s Tan Jee Say, who is reportedly leading a new opposition alliance.

The new alliance is not registered yet but will probably consist of smaller opposition parties like SingFirst, People’s Power Party (PPP), Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Reform Party (RP). This is their idea of increasing their chances for the upcoming GE.

Captain of the ship, Tan Jee Say, believes that the alliance can secure more votes by depending on Dr Tan Cheng Bock to split the PAP’s votes. He is confident that things will go well as long as they place their bets on Dr Tan and the Progress Singapore Party (PSP).

That being said, he is certain the opposition will still get a 30 to 40% share with or without Dr Tan.

If only it was that easy. An alliance may come with more manpower but they should not be complacent and pin everything on Dr Tan/PSP. Furthermore, many Singaporeans will think of the Workers’ Party when you ask them about the opposition. With a big, strong and impressionable team like WP, the alliance will not stand much of a chance just depending on someone else.

They may want to start pooling resources and coming up with their own analyses, plans and strategies. Hoping for other people to do the work for them is not a plan.

Singaporeans are concerned about the kind of policies they have and how they propose to make our lives better. Having a bigger alliance that has a lot of hope but no political strategy will not give them a share of the pie.

So while they may have a bigger ship and bigger crew, they will have to work harder prove that it will not sink.
