Gender rights group AWARE Singapore will be holding a virtual festival called AWAREFest Love & Rage to commemorate its 35th anniversary. The event aims to honour the work that women have done and empower the next generation of activists. The 5-day festival will include discussions on women in politics, social media activism, gender equality, and more.
Interesting enough, AWAREFest is sponsored by the US Embassy of Singapore. It is one thing to have local sponsors but a different matter entirely when a foreign sponsor steps in.
While it is important to have conversations on human/gender rights, these issues should be dealt with by Singaporeans instead of having to involve foreign entities. What does it mean for the US Embassy to want to be involved in an event like this? What makes AWARE so special to gain its support?
Granted that the AWAREFest may be for a good cause, it should not be an avenue for foreign interference. For a society that has come so far, surely Singaporeans are mature enough to deal with our own matters?
