In the midst of the Wuhan Virus outbreak where mask shortages are abound, an elderly couple decided to profit from this to sell surgical masks at inflated prices.

Just two days ago, an elderly woman was illegally selling surgical masks outside an empty shop house at Toa Payoh Lorong 6. According to witnesses, she did not proactively promote what she was selling but would sell surgical masks to whoever approached her.

An elderly man in his 70s will usually take over from her at mid-day to continue selling masks.

The couple was selling a box of 50 single-use surgical masks for $35, which is more than three times the original selling price. Although people found her surgical masks too expensive, they were willing to fork out the money as surgical masks are out of stock in many places.

Nevertheless, some members of the public were angry at the elderly couple’s antics and reported them to the police. It was only after police intervention did they close the stall and stop their business.

At times like this, it is insensitive and inappropriate to profit from Singaporeans. Elderly couple or not, these antics should be stopped so that everyone can get affordable masks and feel a little safer.
