Former Loan Shark Runner Regrets Chopping Debtor’s Hand Off, Wants to Apologise to Him in Person

56-year-old Lin, a former loan shark runner once chopped off the right hand of a debtor, for refusing to repay money owed. For his actions, he was jailed for 10 years and given 24 strokes of the cane.

However, as Lin revealed in an interview, this was not his first brush with the law. In fact, this was the sixth time that Lin had gone into prison. In total, Lin spent nearly 30 years of his life in and out of prison, and also enduring over 100 strokes of the cane.

Lin is now a supervisor at Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh, located along the popular Jalan Kayu food street. Speaking to reporters, Lin recalled how he joined secret society gangs when he was younger, and how his parents would come visit him in prison in tears every time.

Lin says that the passing of his 80-year-old father while he was still serving a prison sentence, woke him up, and ultimately motivated him to turn over a new leaf.

He is very grateful to the boss of Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh for giving him the job opportunity, where he worked his way up from cleaner to a supervisor. However, he still deeply regrets his actions in his younger years, in particular, the chopping of a debtor’s right hand.

He dare not hope for forgiveness from the victim, but only the chance to apologise to him in person, and to tell him how he deeply regrets his actions.
