On 10th December, Nick Mathew Chia, took to Facebook to share the ordeal her 5-year-old daughter Kara had to endure.

According to Nick Mathew Chia, he and his family had just finished having dinner at ION Orchard, when his 5-year-old daughter needed to use the toilet. This was something pretty normal that has gone on for years without issue.

Inside the toilet, Nick’s helper helped Kara to wash her hands, before washing her own hands. While the helper was washing her hands, Kara proceeded to dry her hands with a hand dryer, something which the 5-year-old had no difficulties doing.

However, to the helper’s shock, Kara’s finger was crushed and amputated by the hand dryer. This had happened because the hand dryer did not have its vent covering, which would have prevented the child from sticking her finger inside. Kara had probably thought the gap was a tissue dispenser or one of those Dyson “put your hand inside” kind of dryer.

The damage to Kara’s finger was extensive, as the fan blades inside the dryer had completely crushed the finger bones. Nick had apparently picked up pieces of Kara’s finger bones, in hopes that the doctors would be able to repair her finger.

According to Nick, ION Orchard’s technical crew and management staff who came down to tend to the incident could not even find the right keys to unlock the cabinet that was housing the hand dryer. This clearly showed just how poorly maintained these equipment are in the shopping centre.

Nick’s 5-year-old daughter is now completely traumatized by the incident, and now stares in fear at any hand dryer or paper dispenser in the toilet.

Nick hopes that with the advancement of medical technology, Kara can once again be complete with a functional prosthetic finger.
