It is undeniable that Leong Mun Wai of Progress Singapore Party has one of the thickest skin in Parliament. The NCMP creates news almost every time he asks a parliamentary question. He has been rebuked many times but it does not stop him from asking more.

As a matter of fact, he raised more questions than the average politician, even surpassing that of Leader of Opposition Pritam Singh and Workers’ Party Chair Sylvia Lim.

Here are some of his controversial moments:

We do not need to compensate for terminating a contract

This week, he insinuated that the government is spending too much on SPH Media Trust and Sports Hub. He found no reason to compensate the latter for terminating their contract. Instead, they should pay us for letting them use Singapore’s branding for so many years.

He claimed that if we can save on compensation, we will have enough to exempt us from 2 years’ worth of GST.

His allegations were shot down by Minister Indranee Rajah who explained that the compensation is comparable to the amount payable to Sports Hub if they were to continue with the contract.

“In a giant leap of logic, he then attempts to link the Sports Hub and the SPH Media Trust matters to a completely unrelated issue – the GST and now also to ComCare.”

Filed petition on behalf of 5 residents

Two months ago, Leong Mun Wai filed a petition on behalf of 5 residents to call for a stop to the Ang Mo Kio SERS. He went ahead even though he was aware that 500 other households were agreeable. Has there been anyone this brave?

Insisted on a number after he was given a number

In the July 2022 Parliamentary exchange, Minister Ng Eng Hen said that 3400 new citizens are or will be serving NS.

Strangely, Leong kept pressing Dr Ng to give him a number.

“You still have to give me a number.”

Again:

“I think there are still a significant number of new citizens who did not perform NS… I think the Minister opened up the debate, and now he’s running away from the debate.”

Did not understand what is “Time Over”

In March this year, Leong did not get to ask a question because it was past the cut-off time in Parliament. He then posted on Facebook to complain that Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin denied him a chance to speak.

In reality, no politician, not just Leong, was allowed to speak beyond the cut-off time. He apologized for his behaviour afterwards.

It takes balls to speak up for Singaporeans, but it takes more to ask his kind of questions. What do you think of Leong Mun Wai? Has he done a good job in representing your concerns? Is he brave for repeatedly posing these questions only to get rebutted, or is he asking questions for the sake of asking questions?
