Over the weekend, The Online Citizen held a fundraising dinner to gather donations to keep it alive. The alternative news site claims to be the longest-running one, having been launched since 2006. TOC’s founder, Terry Xu, was glad that the event enjoyed a star-studded attendance but said that they did not manage to raise enough funds.

The event was attended by Lee Hsien Yang and his wife, Lee Suet Fern, Progress Singapore Party’s Tan Cheng Bock, WP’s Pritam Singh, Leon Perera, Daniel Goh, Gerald Giam and Dennis Tan, SDP’s Chee Soon Juan, John Tan and Paul Tambyah, People’s Voice’s Lim Tean and SPP’s Jeanette Chong-Aruldoss and Jose Raymond.

Many of them posted congratulatory notes on social media and agreed that it is important to have an independent site like TOC to check on the mainstream media.

WP’s Pritam Singh said: “We hope the online media space continues to thrive and wish TOC well. As long as the online media have the interests of Singapore and Singaporeans at heart, pursue an independent course – irrespective of the political perspective they approach an issue from – there is no reason why they should not do even better.”

SPP’s Jeanette Chong-Aruldoss chimed in by saying that the presence of TOC will make Singaporeans better-informed. She made it a point to remind Singaporeans to show support by donating to TOC’s expenses.

Singaporeans must be happy that TOC and Terry Xu can bring so many well-known politicians together and naturally be more willing to help. With so much support, there is no doubt that TOC will enact the real change and freedom it has always asked for. There will certainly be much to expect and Singaporeans can look forward to seeing if it will live up to its promise.
