It was reported in the news, that over 350 Indonesian healthcare workers (including doctors and nurses) have contracted the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus, despite being vaccinated with Sinovac, with dozens hospitalised due to serious complications.
In Kudus district alone where it is battling the highly infectious Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus, over 5000 medical workers have been vaccinated with the Sinovac vaccine, but some who already have been fully vaccinated, still fell ill and was diagnosed with COVID-19.
According to the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI), data gathered in the field suggests that the infections were of the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus, leading some experts such as epidemiologist Dicky Budiman from Australia’s Griffin University, to doubt the effectiveness of the Sinovac vaccine against the Delta strain in the real world.
In the Indonesian capital city of Jakarta, radiologist Dr Prijo Sidipratomo said that he knew of at least 6 doctors who were hospitalised with COVID-19 in the past month, despite being fully vaccinated with the Sinovac vaccine, and that one of them is currently fighting for his life in the ICU. Dr Prijo is urging the public not to solely rely on the vaccinations for protection, and that they need to take extra precautions.
In the wake of this startling discovery, the spokesman from Sinovac could not be reached for comment.
