A taxi driver who picked up a passenger from Orchard road, and met with a traffic jam, decided to stop the meter, in order not to charge the passenger, as he claims that money is difficult to earn.

For his actions, 70-year-old taxi driver Mr Lim Gek Hua, earned the praise of not only his passenger, but many netizens.

55-year-old Miss Laila White boarded Mr Lim’s taxi last Friday (25th Nov), at around 3pm at ION Orchard, to return to her home at Bedok. While en route, Mr Lim encountered a massive traffic jam on the CTE.

However, to Miss White’s pleasant surprise, Mr Lim stopped the meter while the taxi was stuck in the jam. His reasoning for doing so? Mr Lim says that he grew up in a poor family, and understood how hard it is to earn money. He stopped the meter so that passenger Miss White, would not be excessively charged for just sitting in traffic.

According to Mr Lim, he had worked as a lorry driver for over 45-years, before switching to become a taxi driver in the last six years. He says that he works from 6am in the morning to 645pm everyday, and makes around $30 after deducting operating costs.
