Socio-political activist Gilbert Goh has called for a mass boycott of Singapore’s public transport this weekend after the government announced an impending 7% fare hike.

The Public Transport Council (PTC) said that Singaporeans with normal adult ez-link cards will pay 9 cents more from 28 Dec 2019. In line with this, it will introduce more concessions for those who want to cushion the hike.

Gilbert Goh was apparently upset at the increased transport cost and encouraged Singaporeans to boycott the MRT and bus this Sunday.

We choose the weekend to boycott because you have a choice not to go out on that day compared to a weekday of which you have no choice but to go to work. Carpool or take Grab on this weekend to show solidarity against this transport fare hike.

For people who do not have cars, he suggested that they can either stay at home or “walk the distance”. Those who like his idea may refer to the following as a gauge of how much they can exercise if they were to go shopping at Orchard Rd this weekend:

It will take 5 hours for a one-way trip from Yishun to Orchard Rd,

close to 3 hours if you live in Jurong,

and a little longer if you are coming from Tampines.

So, listen to Gilbert Goh if you want to save a little money, make a point and go the distance. “We can all do something together in a civil and peaceful manner! Don’t take it lying down…”

Are you ready for this Sunday?
