85-year-old Mr Ye who is partially blind has been staying in his bed bug infested home in Chin Swee road for over 20 years.
However, with the help of a group of volunteers, Mr Ye is now able to live with dignity once again. Around two weeks ago, a group of volunteers cleaned up Mr Ye’s home and exterminated the bed bugs.
While the sight of the crawling bugs had scared many of the female volunteers, they soldiered on and continued with the cleaning. The volunteers also arranged for new bedding and a wardrobe for Mr Ye.
In the interview, Mr Ye said that he is very happy now that he can finally sleep at night without getting bitten by bed bugs. He added that this was the first time in his life that he can finally see hope in his life.
The volunteer’s work did not end there as they followed up to check on Mr Ye. The volunteers bought an electric fan and a electric kettle for Mr Ye. To help Mr Ye with his living expenses, they also promised to find sponsorship for his utility bills.
Compared to Mr Ye, many of us are already living in relative luxury. While not all of us are able to volunteer, we can do our bit for those less fortunate by donating to the respective charities whenever we can.
