Jeannette Chong-Aruldoss, former member of the Singapore People’s Party, recently posted on Facebook the good news that her son had finally returned home. Her son Evans had been studying in the UK when the COVID-19 outbreak happened.

She said that she had to scramble to get him back before the 14-day Stay Home Notice took effect as “staying home for 14 days sucked”.

I got my little darling Evans Aruldoss back! On Friday, his uni told students they were free to leave campus if they…

In a similar vein, Chairman of SPP Jose Raymond posted on Facebook about his decision to run back to Singapore from KL after Malaysia announced its restricted movement order. He commented that he cannot afford to return to Singapore after the Stay Home Notice takes effect as he had new areas to cover in his walkabout in Potong Pasir.

Awwwww. 😍 Picture taken yesterday while I was in KL. Decided to run back after the restricted movement announcement by the Malaysian PM.

Although Jose Raymond and Jeannette Chong-Aruldoss have always been critical of the Singapore Government, it seems like they know fully that Singapore is still the safest place in times of crisis and uncertainty, what with its good infrastructure and healthcare support systems. Both of them know that they will be taken care of here.

That being said, they should not try to skirt around the Stay Home Notice regardless of whether it was imposed on them or not; not being served with one does not mean that they are not prone to the virus. Jeannette Chong-Aruldoss should still make her son stay home while Jose Raymond should not go for his walkabout if he cared for the health of Potong Pasir residents.

As individuals who are active in Singapore’s political scene, they should know better and take initiative to practise social responsibility. After all, the most basic thing a politician should do is to consider the well-being of Singaporeans, isn’t it?
