Some food stall owners at the North Spine Food Court (located inside NTU) were caught off guard when they were only informed the night before the implementation of the circuit breaker measures (6th April), that the food court would be closed for a month.

As a result, many of the stall owners had to throw away the ingredients they had prepared for the next day.

Many of these stall owners appealed for the management to change their decision. Among them is 58-year-old Mr Wong, who said that he will be making monthly losses of over $8000 in employee salary, rental, and overheads.

Mr Vincent Tan, Executive Director of the Select Group which manages the North Spine Food Court said that a decision was made to close the food court for one month due to the anticipated drop in revenue during the circuit breaker period. He also said that he had sought the agreement of the stall owners before announcing the decision.

Mr Tan added that the university (NTU) will waive the rental fee for April, and he hopes that all stall owners will continue to operate in the food court when it reopens. He also promised that he will pass on all of the relief funds given by the university to help the stall owners tide over this difficult period.
