On 28th Jul last month at around 10pm, 36-year-old chef John and his wife passed by a spa treatment centre in Aljunied and decided to try out their cupping treatment to relieve his back ache. However, after receiving the treatment, the chef ended up with painful blisters on his back.

Describing his experience, the 36-year-old chef said that his back was all red and sore after the cupping treatment, and had around 16 circle shaped markings. He added that the staff at the spa centre then offered him the 11th session for free of charge.

Speaking to reporters, 41-year-old Mdm Yang (the owner of the spa treatment centre) said she had advised John to see a doctor as she suspect it might be an allergic reaction to the cupping treatment, and promised to bear all medical costs. She has also since refunded the cost of the couple’s cupping treatment at her spa treatment centre.

While cupping (or Ba Guan) is a traditional Chinese medical treatment for body ailments, one should always check with a medical professional before proceeding with such treatments. If you notice anything unusual happening to your body after the treatment, you should also see a doctor immediately.
